The Adopt A mile Program
Since 1988, Alabama PALS has partnered with the Alabama Department of Transportation to coordinate the Alabama Adopt A Mile Program. Over 1,900 miles of Alabama roadways are being cleaned and maintained by volunteers in every corner of Alabama. This statewide program is truly a testament to the saying "We Are Making A Difference." Adopt A Mile signs with the participating group name are provided through ALDOT. All applications are processed through the ABB and then sent to ALDOT for sign production. If the adopted mile is on a US or Alabama highway, ALDOT erects the sign on the designated mile. If the adopted mile is on a County road or highway, ALDOT provides the sign, but the erecting of the sign is the responsibility of the county. The participation in this and other volunteer programs save the taxpayers of Alabama millions of dollars each year in cleanup costs.

Originally developed as a request from elderly citizens wanting to do their part in keeping Alabama clean and beautiful, the Adopt An Area Program has grown into a program welcomed by many volunteer groups in our great state. Scouts, church groups, schools, civic clubs and many other groups have chosen sites where they can clean and maintain areas in their respective communities. Schools yards, church grounds, historic sites, city parks are all favorites that are being adopted through the Adopt An Area Program. Choose your site, fill out the application form and PALS will provide you or your group with a sign and wooden post to display at your chosen cleanup location.
