History & Officers:

In June of 1983 the Alabaster Public Library moved from its cramped quarters in the basement of Municipal Annex to its present location on the corner of First Avenue West and Ninth Street.  The beautiful new library was dedicated on June 26, 1983 as the Albert L. Scott Library in memory of the late Albert L. Scott, whose widow, Caroline, donated the land for the library.

Earlier that year, Gladys Harper, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Alabaster Public Library, asked Reba Hatcher, a library volunteer, to help form a Friends of the Alabaster Public Library organization in Alabaster.  Reba, along with others interested in helping the library, did just that, and on March 31, 1983, the Friends of the Alabaster Public Library was incorporated.  Reba served as first president.  Other presidents have been Steve Fournier, Rose Ellen Hankins, Stephanie Johnson, Steve Abbott, Harriet Meeks,Lora Bair, Beth McCandless, Judy Wood and Claire Owens.

Accomplishments:
Over the years, the Friends have raised and donated money to buy books, reference materials, supplies and to pay for special programs/activites such as the Summer Reading Program and the Storyline for Children.  During the year the Friends help to keep the spirit of the seasons with beautiful wreaths for the doors.  The Friends also provides the library's float in the Annual Alabaster Christmas Parade as well as decorating the library with colorful poinsettias during the holidays.
