Kindle E-Books on Camellia Net!
| Using Camellia Net with your Amazon Kindle or a Kindle format web viewer like the Kindle Cloud Reader |
(Click the image above to open Camellia Net ) |
Step 1: Click the image above to go to Camellia Net This takes you to the Camellia Net page. On the right hand side is a green column with a Quick Search box. |
Step 2: Find an item you wish to check out using the Quick Search box on the green menu column on the right side of the screen. or select the VIEW ALL KINDLE BOOKS link. Note that we have over 2,000 items in the collective library in Kindle format, so Quick Search may be a good option. You can also run the VIEW ALL KINDLE BOOKS search, then check the box at the top of the page that only shows available copies. You can also run an ADVANCED SEARCH. This lets you select Kindle Format and how they are ordered (title, most popular etc.). You can run this search with title/author/keyword and ISBN blank, giving you a full list! or select one of the preset searches like RECENTLY RETURNED (This will show all formats, not just Kindle) Keep in mind that the library does not control Overdrive, our Camellia Net provider, and links may stop working. Please email alreference@shelbycounty-al.org to report a link error, or call the library at 664-6822 and ask for reference. |
Step 3: No matter how you found your item, click on the ADD TO CART link to the right of the title for the Kindle edition book. If the title is checked out by another patron, the ADD TO CART link will be replaced by the PLACE A HOLD link. PLACE A HOLD will ask for your email address and will require you to confirm this by typing it in twice, the two fields must match. Overdrive will email you when the item becomes available! |
Step 4: Once you have an item ADDED TO CART, you can click the link to CONTINUE BROWSING or click the link to PROCEED TO CHECKOUT. Usually you want to go straight to checkout. |
| Step 5: Select your library: Using the pull-down menu, select ALBERT L. SCOTT PUBLIC LIBRARY from the list of libraries. |
Step 6: Login with your LIBRARY CARD NUMBER. This number is displayed on the back of your card and begins 217260... Note: Even if you have logged in previously you will be asked to login again the first time you checkout for each session. |
| Step 7: You can set your checkout period for either 7 or 14 days. You can always return a Kindle E-book early (More on this later) The default checkout is 14 days. Overdrive shows you how many items you have left in your allowed checkouts after this item is downloaded. You can only checkout 5 items at a time. CONFIRM CHECKOUT to get to the download screen |
| Step 8: Click GET FOR KINDLE next to the title. |
Step 9: You will now be taken to AMAZON.COM and their listing for the selected book. On the right side you will see GET LIBRARY BOOK It may work better if you are already SIGNED INTO your AMAZON ACCOUNT. Otherwise you might have to try the download feature twice! |
| Step 10: You will need to sign into your AMAZON ACCOUNT. This should be the same account that you use for your Kindle. |
Step 11: This takes you to the KINDLE STORE Select which Kindle you want to send the book to, or which device (like KINDLE CLOUD READER). This also lets you register a new Kindle |
| Step 12: USB or WIFI Connection. Your borrowed Kindle book may display on your Kindle greyed-out and not usable. You will need to switch to WI-FI and find a wireless network, or connect via USB cable to an internet-enabled computer to activate the title. |
Step 13: Read and return! The material you checked out cannot be used by another patron until you return the book, or the entire 2 week checkout expires. You can go to MANAGE YOUR KINDLE on the Kindle Store. and under ACTIONS you can RETURN the book once you are done with it. Also under ACTIONS you can DELETE the title. AMAZON leaves the title on your library of books until you delete it in case you wish to purchase the title. |

For another source of free Kindle compatible books check out PROJECT GUTENBERG. If the item is out of copyright, most likely it will be available in Kindle format! Jane Austen, Arthur Conan Doyle, Shakespeare, Mark Twain... all available for free! |
