Mayor

Background:

David Frings was elected as Alabaster’s Mayor in September, 2000.  He has been a resident of Alabaster since he moved from Jefferson County in 1982.  Mayor Frings graduated Shades Valley High School in 1973 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham with a major in geology and minor in biology in 1976.  He began work with Alabama Power Company after graduation in October, 1976.

Mayor Frings worked as a Geologist for Alabama Power Company in the Construction and Power Generation Services Departments until his transfer to Southern Company in 2000.  He worked as a Geologist, Construction Superintendent, and Safety Coordinator until his retirement in March of 2006 after almost 30 years of continuous service.  After retirement, he accepted a position with Samford University as the Director of the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center.  As the Director, Frings is responsible for the development and operation of the center which will feature a field research laboratory and exhibits hall with displays of ecosystems in central Alabama.  He will also be responsible for programs and training at the center.  He also is the associate director of the Environmental Management program at Samford University and teaches on an adjunct basis in the same department. 

Mayor Frings and his wife Jennifer have been married since 1982.  They have three daughters; Haley, Holley, and Heidi.

The mayor finished a Master’s degree from Samford University in Environmental Management in December 2008.  The training and education received in this curriculum will be useful in developing sustainable concepts for Alabaster in the future. 

Prior to his election, Mayor Frings served on the Alabaster Recycling Committee, chaired the Business and Marketing Committee, and served as Chairman of the Water Board for 2 years.

Future:                                             

Mayor Frings has many visions for Alabaster in 2011 and future years.  His top five goals for 2011 include:

·         Additional partnering with the Shelby County Schools that serve the citizens of Alabaster.

·         Work through our State and County officials to improve major roads.

·         Continue to build on our economic success and progress

·          Continue to grow and improve our park system.
